Botox® is an injectable product that blocks nerve signals between some of the muscles in your face and your brain. When we smile, frown or make other expressions, nerves send signals to the brain that tell the muscles of the face to contract. When muscles contract, they tug on the skin, eventually creating lines and wrinkles that can persist even when we're not smiling or frowning. Botox® blocks those nerve transmissions so muscles don't contract and lines and wrinkles are prevented from forming.
No, Botox® is designed to work on dynamic wrinkles, or those wrinkles that form as a result of facial movement and motion. To treat “static” wrinkles that form as a result of age, you need to use dermal filler products.
Dermal fillers, or cosmetic fillers, are used to treat lines and wrinkles that form as a result of sun damage and aging, as well as scars including acne scars. They can also be used to add volume to the lips or to areas of the face like the cheeks where natural volume tends to decrease over time. Today's fillers also help promote the production of collagen, one of skin's natural “building blocks” that helps form a supportive structure to make skin look and feel firmer and more resilient. Collagen production also tends to decline with age, so fillers are a great way to help encourage ramped-up production.
Most Botox® treatments need to be touched up about every four months, although with repeated treatment, wrinkles and creases will begin to relax and you may need less frequent treatments to maintain your results. Fillers can vary, with some providing results that can last for well over a year. Intermittent touch-ups can also help you prolong your results.
