What is high cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the body and available in certain foods which plays an important role in the body's normal, healthy function. However, if there's too much cholesterol in the bloodstream, it can begin to accumulate along the walls of your arteries, making arteries stiff (so-called hardening of the arteries) and interfering with the normal, healthy flow of blood. Left untreated, high cholesterol can lead to strokes and heart attacks.

Why do I need to see the doctor regularly if I have diabetes or high cholesterol?

If you have a chronic medical issue like high cholesterol or diabetes, you need to have routine office visits and examinations to ensure you're managing the diseases properly so you can avoid serious medical complications associated with these conditions. In addition to a physical exam, blood work will also be ordered to check for blood sugar or cholesterol levels, and other tests may be ordered to check for the presence of other diseases that can often occur as a result of these conditions. Medication and lifestyle changes will also be recommended.

How often do I need to be seen if I have diabetes or high cholesterol?

That depends on a lot of factors, including your age, your overall health and whether you have or are at risk for other serious medical issues. During your office visit, a visitation schedule will be developed based on your needs that will help ensure you stay as healthy as possible.

What side effects can occur if I don't manage my diabetes properly?

Without proper management, diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage, circulation issues (which in turn can lead to an amputation), skin conditions and infection, and hearing impairment. Recent studies have also linked diabetes with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease.
